June 2019 Announcements

Orphaned Children and North Texans

This summer through Opened Hearts and Homes for Children several North Texas Orthodox families will indeed open their homes for orphans from Ukraine.  A total of six children will benefit from this experience. They will arrive on June 28 in Austin and stay in the extended Dallas, Ft. Worth area until the first week of August.  Lena and Ryan Key will host fifteen year- old Nastya who was hosted by Lucie Muns last Christmas. Nastya is very excited for this opportunity and cannot wait to see everyone at our parish again. Jamie and Aaron Stepich will welcome fourteen-year-old Sasha. It will be the Stepich’s first time hosting and will be Sasha’s first time in the United States. We also have two additional Orthodox families welcoming children here in North Texas. A family from St Maximus Church in Denton will receive a sibling set of three: 2 sisters and a brother age seven, nine and ten. Also, a family from St. Sava Church in Allen will welcome a seventeen-year-old girl into their home during the summer break.  Due to her older age it will be her only time to participate in the program. Everyone is excited and cannot wait for the kids’ arrivals.  Please keep all the families together with children traveling in your prayers.  And please feel free to contact Lena Key, a regional director for the program, with further questions. Thank you.

St. Vladimir Seminary Night on June 2

On Sunday, June 2, we will be blessed with a visit from Archpriest Chad Hatfield, President of St. Vladimir Orthodox Seminary in Crestwood, New York.  He will be accompanied by Matushka Robyn Hatrak, who coordinates Special Events at the Seminary and functions as the School’s Alumni Relations Officer.  Fr. Chad will be a keynote speaker at a special SVS Night: Big Hats and Cocktails from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on June 2.  The meal, entertainment and testimonies will take place at River Ranch in the Stockyards.  The venue provides an elegant western setting and is very close to many Stockyard attractions.

Along with Fr. Chad we will hear from Archpriest Philip LeMasters, Priest at St. Luke Orthodox Church in Abilene, and Professor at McMurry College; Archpriest Jason Foster, Dean and Priest at Nativity of our Lord Orthodox Church in Shreveport; and Fr. Photius Avant, Priest at St. Sava Orthodox Church in Plano/Allen.  Fr. Photius is known to all at St. Barbara’s, and will be our exuberant emcee for the night.  Live Country Music will be provided by a local band, Uptown Drifters.  We are planning as well to provide Childcare at St. Barbara’s, for members of St. Barbara’s, so that parents may enjoy an evening out without too many distractions.

Tickets for the event will be $35.00 a person. and may be purchased online through the Seminary website: www.svots.edu (see special events) or by calling Matushka Robyn at 914.961.8313 x330.  For those who wish to help further with Seminary support there are, and will be, plenty of opportunities.  St. Vladimir’s gratefully accepts any and all donations.  Please make your plans to join us for St. Vladimir Seminary Night.  It promises to be an enjoyable evening, and your participation will help with the education of future Church leaders. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Memory Eternal Diana

On April 8, Diana (Anna) Blickenstaff, mother of Syra Ruehle fell asleep in the Lord.  Memorial services were conducted at St. Peter Antiochian Church in Southwest Ft. Worth.  Our prayers for Diana and for her family.  May her memory be eternal!  “May the Lord God beatify her, give her rest in Abraham’s bosom and number her among the righteous!”

Music Rehearsals

We continue our Youth Choir Rehearsals with a gathering of children, 3rd grade to senior in High School, who have already participated in past sessions. Due to packed weekend schedules we will meet this month on Sunday, June 9 at 12:30 pm, during Coffee Hour. In addition, several men have expressed an interest in reviewing basics of choral singing.  We will have our second Male Singing Workshops on Thursday, June 20 at 6:30 pm.  If you are interested please see Fr. Basil and/or join us on June 20.

Picnic Thank You!

We would like to thank David and Darla Stepich for hosting the Archangel Gabriel Mission Picnic on Sunday, May 26.  By some counts, over 80 people were able to enjoy the afternoon, with 47 people participating in the Divine Liturgy that morning in Azle.  Friends and relatives of the Stepich family, and of Fr. Chrysostom and Matushka Katherine Arthur were also present adding to the great fellowship.  The food was amazing and the children seemed to enjoy swimming, even coming close to a non-poisonous water snake.  The brief encounter provided added excitement.  Again, thank you David, Darla and to all who helped out with this event!

Congratulations Graduates

We congratulate our 2019 Graduates: Antwian (Anthony) Davis, Esther Ruehle, Julia (Ann) Teinert and Allison (Justina) Williams.  Many blessed years to them and to their families!
