We want to congratulate Mark Kyle Brem on his reception into the Orthodox Church. Mark was Baptized and Chrismated on Saturday, December 22. Many Blessed Years to the newly illumined, as well as to his sponsor, Dennis Parish, family and friends.
We are excited to announce that starting this month Archangel Gabriel Mission in Azle will expand its monthly schedule to include two Saturday Vespers and two Sunday Liturgies: typically, the 2nd and 4th weekends. We look forward to even more progress during 2019.
The address of the Mission: 1157 S.E. Parkway (Jacksboro Highway).
St. Vladimir Seminary Banquet in Ft. Worth!
We are equally excited about the opportunity afforded St. Barbara’s to host a St. Vladimir Seminary Banquet (Cowboys and Cocktails) on Sunday evening, June 2. The night will offer a western themed atmosphere complete with a live band (Uptown Drifters) and western inspired food stations. It will be held at River Ranch Stockyards, with many local attractions nearby. Guest speakers will include Archpriest Chad Hatfield (President of SVS), Archpriest Philip LeMasters (Professor at McMurray University in Abilene), Priest Jason Foster (Dean of Mississippi River Deanery of the Diocese of the South), and Priest Photius Avant (St. Sava’s in Plano, Texas) as Emcee. In addition, currently we are planning for child care at St. Barbara’s making it easier for parents to attend the banquet. Please mark your calendars for this important event, and see Tracie DeBolt or Fr. Basil Zebrun for more information.
Continuing with efforts initiated last year by Zach Lueth, Rita Miller and Mark Tarpley, we would like to work toward the eventual formation of a Youth Choir at St. Barbara's. Because of work schedules and babies due in late Spring, Fr. Basil will be working initially with the youth, 2nd or 3rd grade and up. Our first sessions will focus on basics of choral singing: volume, pitch, blending and articulation, as well as specific hymns. We hope that this progressive effort will enable participants to sing parts of services by the middle of 2019, and perhaps to offer a brief Christmas Concert next December. Our first rehearsal will be Saturday, January 19th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm just prior to Great Vespers.
Church School, General Confession and Council
This month's Church School will meet on Saturday, January 12, at 4:00 pm. General Confession will be conducted on Wednesday, January 16, at 6:00 pm and a Council Meeting will be held on Thursday, January 24 at 6:30 pm in preparation for the Annual Parish Meeting.
Annual Chili Cookoff, Sunday, January 20
On Sunday, January 20, immediately after the Divine Liturgy, St. Barbara's will hold its Annual Chili and Cornbread Competition. A sheet will be placed in the hall for contestants to sign-up. Prizes will be offered for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category. You will not want to miss this popular event, which constitutes Coffee Hour for that day. Please see Mrs. Lynn Powers, our Chili Coordinator, for more details.
General Parish Meeting, Sunday, February 3
St. Barbara's will convene its Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday, February 3 (Super Bowl Sunday), immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Given Archangel Gabriel Mission’s upgraded 2019 schedule, as well as other parish activities, February 3 was the most advantageous date. We hope to end the meeting by 2:00 pm at the latest. All Church members, catechumens and inquirers are invited to participate as we discuss decisions affecting the life of St. Barbara’s and the Azle Mission.
2019 Pysanky Festival, 36th Anniversary
We are excited to announce that St. Barbara’s will hold its 36th ANNUAL PYSANKY (Ukrainian Easter Egg) FESTIVAL on Friday and Saturday, April 5 & 6. Orthodox Easter (Pascha) will be celebrated on Sunday, April 28, and Western Easter on Sunday, April 21. Calling all Egg Decorators!! We hope to have an excellent selection of beautifully decorated eggs, as well as a wide array of Pysanky related gift items. The parish would also greatly appreciate word of mouth and social media advertising. Please mark your calendars and look for sign-up sheets in late early March, marking days and times during which we can offer our presence, time and energy to help out with this milestone event in our community.
